FTSE Falls on Rising Shop Prices and US-Iran Tensions
UK stocks suffered a minor setback at the beginning of the week as investors weighed two major concerns: US-Iran tensions and higher-than-expected shop price inflation.
The FTSE 100 slipped by 0.29% following reports of renewed clashes between the US and Iran, which added uncertainty to energy prices that could impact Europe's cost base.
The British Retail Consortium reported a 1.5% increase in shop prices from August last year, exceeding July's 0.9% rise and surpassing expectations.
Helen Dickinson, CEO of the British Retail Consortium, attributed the higher inflation to increased energy, ingredient, and commodity costs that are now being reflected on store shelves, particularly for imported and processed pantry goods.
