Fuel Price Drop Helps Cool Inflation in New Zealand
Falling fuel prices have contributed to a moderation in inflation in New Zealand, according to recent data from Stats NZ.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July showed that food prices rose 0.1 percent for the month, but were 1.9 percent higher than the same period last year - the lowest annual rate since December 2024.
Fruit and vegetables were a major driver of the increase in food prices, with strawberries, cucumbers, and capsicums being among the items that saw significant price rises. However, cheaper meat and poultry, as well as some grocery items such as soft drinks, helped to offset these increases.
The overall CPI was 4.1 percent higher than the same period last year, but economists said that this was a moderation from previous months. ASB senior economist Mark Smith said that consumer caution and subdued demand were having a moderating impact on inflation, while Westpac senior economist Satish Ranchhod agreed that inflation had likely peaked and would ease further.
