Fuel Prices Surge Past $3 in NZ, Worsening Inflation Pressure
The price of petrol has surged past $3 per liter in New Zealand, putting pressure on business margins and contributing to rising inflation. Brent crude oil prices rose above $100 a barrel last Friday, driven by escalating conflict with Iran and increased US tariffs on New Zealand goods.
For businesses that rely on fuel for their operations, such as freight operators and trucking companies, the increase in diesel prices is particularly concerning. Diesel prices have risen 42.6% in just one month, with a 36.9% annual increase.
This surge in fuel costs comes at a critical time for New Zealand's economy, which was already struggling due to high unemployment and household spending cuts. The Reserve Bank has forecast inflation of 4.1% for the year to June 2026, with Middle East fuel costs driving up prices.
Business owners are being advised to quickly reprice their services before margins narrow further, as fuel adjustment factors and surcharges across logistics chains are likely to increase rapidly.
