Fuel Tax Delay Threatens Economic Development in New Zealand

The New Zealand road freight industry is warning that delaying fuel tax hikes could have severe consequences for the country's economy.

The Labour Party has committed to not increasing the fuel excise duty for its entire term, but Transporting New Zealand chief executive Dom Kalasih says this will only dig a deeper hole and threaten economic development.

Kalasih states that continuing to put off the increase would be a threat to economic development and that the country needs to invest in its roading network to keep pace with a growing economy.

The Treasury's advice suggests that each six-month deferral of the planned increase from January 2027 has a cost of around $300 million, meaning Labour's three-year deferral could cost around $1.8 billion.
