G20 Leaders Receptive to Growth-Focused Policies Amid Trade War Tensions
Scott Bessent's message to the G20 nations is centered around economic growth and deregulation. He argues that the US economy can serve as a model for other countries, where policies focused on boosting private-sector growth should be implemented.
Bessent emphasized that 'the only way for us to get out of this', presumably referring to the current global economic situation, is to 'grow our way out of it.' He expressed confidence in G20 leaders' receptiveness to his proposal.
The US Federal Reserve chairman, Kevin Warsh, also weighed in on the discussion. He noted that the economic debate has shifted since his last stint at the Fed, citing the decline of 'secular stagnation' and a 'global savings glut.' Warsh stated that growth is now seen as a choice, rather than an inevitability.
Meanwhile, tensions between nations were on display during the G20 meeting. The US has been engaged in a trade war with some of its closest partners, while also pushing for economic pressure on Iran. Bessent expressed support for the EU's additional economic pressure on Iran, which was seen as a positive development.
