G20 Meeting Brings Focus Back to Yen Stability as Katayama and Bessent Set to Meet Again
Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has confirmed her attendance at the upcoming G20 finance ministers' meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Her participation is significant as she is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The two ministers coordinated a joint currency intervention last month, which saw the yen surge to 155.20 before weakening again.
Katayama reiterated that the joint intervention statement remains valid, but market attention remains focused on whether they can reach an agreement to further stabilize the yen. Analysts note that structural reforms take time to bear fruit and that in the near term, the yen will remain heavily influenced by the US-Japan interest-rate differential.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda is also expected to attend the G20 meeting, which could provide markets with insight into Japan's monetary policy direction. A meeting between Bessent and Ueda would be closely watched for any signals on the interest-rate outlook.
