G20 Tensions Rise as Allies Clash Over Trump's Economic Policies
The annual G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bankers has exposed growing tensions between the US and its closest allies over President Donald Trump's economic policies.
Nearly every session this week in Asheville, North Carolina, opened with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighting the strength of the American economy under Trump, urging other countries to follow the US model.
However, representatives from Europe, Canada, and other friendly nations were not receptive. They criticized several administration policies that they said had hurt their economies, including the ongoing war with Iran, which has disrupted energy markets and shipping.
The allies also questioned Bessent's surprise decision last month to sell US holdings of euros in an effort to support Japan's currency, the yen.
