GBP/JPY Bulls Eye 217.00 as Interest Rate Differential Fuels Rally
The British pound has been on a tear against the Japanese yen, with the GBP/JPY pair pushing higher and setting its sights on the 217.00 level. The recent rally is largely driven by the interest rate differential between the UK and Japan, as the Bank of England maintains a hawkish stance while the Bank of Japan keeps policy ultra-loose.
Technical indicators are also supporting the bullish trend, with momentum indicators like the Relative Strength Index (RSI) remaining in bullish territory. The pair has been in an uptrend, with buyers consistently defending higher lows on the daily chart, and a breakout above 215.00 has opened the door for a move toward 217.00.
Traders are watching the 217.00 level closely, as a decisive break above it could pave the way for further gains toward the 220.00 psychological barrier. On the downside, immediate support is seen at 214.50, followed by the 213.00 area, which aligns with the recent consolidation zone.
The pound's strength against the yen is also supported by the UK's relatively resilient economic data, with services inflation staying elevated. In contrast, Japan's economy faces persistent deflationary pressures, and the BoJ has shown no urgency to normalize policy.
