GBP/JPY Consolidation Continues Amid Japan Fiscal Policy Uncertainty
The British Pound (GBP) continues to consolidate against the Japanese Yen (JPY), struggling to capitalize on its recent rebound from a four-month low. Despite the solid recovery, spot prices have edged lower during the Asian session on Thursday, trading around the 212.30 region, down less than 0.10% for the day.
The Japanese government's proposal to cut the food consumption tax from 8% to 1% for two years starting in April 2027 has undermined the JPY and acted as a tailwind for the GBP/JPY cross. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) backed the proposal, which would provide roughly ¥600 billion a year in cash transfers targeted at low- and middle-income households.
However, analysts at BNY Mellon warn that the lack of a clear funding mechanism remains a key concern, capping any meaningful JPY gains. They describe Japan's fiscal policy as 'fiscal defiance,' with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pressing ahead with the tax cut despite ongoing fiscal concerns and yen weakness.
