GBP/JPY Surges to Near Two-Week High Amid JPY Woes

The British Pound (GBP) has surged to a nearly two-week high against the Japanese Yen (JPY), reaching the 215.35-215.40 area during the European session on Wednesday.

This move comes as the JPY struggles with structural headwinds, including a recent Bank of Japan (BoJ) interest rate hike to its highest level since 1995.

Despite this, borrowing costs in Japan remain significantly lower compared to other major economies, including the UK, keeping the carry trade active and undermining the JPY.

Investors are also concerned about Japan's worsening fiscal conditions due to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's aggressive economic stimulus and tax cuts, as well as ongoing energy disruptions from the Iran war.

While traders may be cautious before Thursday's UK macro data dump, including the preliminary Q2 GDP report, the supportive fundamental backdrop suggests that the path of least resistance for the GBP/JPY cross remains to the upside.
