GBP Surges on Rising Inflation Expectations and Yield Curve Control
The British Pound surged in North American trading, reaching its highest level since February at 1.3659. The GBP/USD pair rose 0.25% with a value of 1.3639. This upward trend is attributed to the latest UK inflation data, which reached a four-month high, solidifying expectations for a Bank of England rate hike by December.
The US Treasury announced a bond buyback program aimed at long-end liquidity, sparking discussions about Yield Curve Control (YCC). The dollar steadied after hitting a two-and-a-half-month low of 98.55 on May 14, with the Dollar Index holding at 98.79.
As markets price in Bank of England tightening, derivative traders are advised to prepare for heightened volatility in the GBP/USD pair. Historically, when the gap between UK and US rate expectations widens, the Sterling tends to experience sustained multi-week rallies.
