GBP Surges Past One-Week High as BOJ Doves
The British Pound (GBP) has rallied to its highest level against the Japanese Yen in over a week, driven by Japan's fiscal challenges and the widening interest rate gap between the two countries.
Japan's high debt levels and ongoing stimulus spending have raised concerns about the sustainability of its fiscal policy, weighing on the Yen. The Bank of England (BoE) has been actively raising interest rates to combat inflation, while the Bank of Japan (BOJ) has maintained an ultra-loose monetary stance at -0.1%.
The interest rate gap has led to increased carry trade activity, where investors borrow in Yen to invest in higher-yielding currencies like the Pound. This divergence has also raised concerns about import costs and inflation in Japan.
