GBP Surges to Two-Week High as Yen Weakens on Fiscal Worries
The British Pound has surged to a two-week high against the Japanese Yen, as investors weigh in on the UK's strong economic prospects and Japan's worsening fiscal conditions.
The GBP/JPY cross climbed to nearly 215.35-215.40 area during the European session on Wednesday, extending its recent recovery from the lowest level since early March.
The rate gap between the UK and Japan continues to favor the Pound, with borrowing costs in Britain significantly higher compared to those in Japan. This has kept the carry trade active, undermining the Japanese Yen and boosting the GBP/JPY cross.
Economic risks stemming from continued energy disruptions due to the Iran war and potential further Bank of Japan rate hikes are also weighing on the JPY.
