GBP/USD Awaits Catalyst from US CPI Data
The GBP/USD exchange rate hovered around 1.3510 during early Asian trading on Friday, as markets waited for a catalyst to break out of its recent range. The pound's movement was largely stable, with investors exercising caution ahead of the release of the U.S. August CPI data.
Recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that the August PPI rose by 5.4% year-on-year, exceeding market expectations and pushing the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September to approximately 70%. The acceleration in year-on-year PPI growth has renewed concerns about the stickiness of U.S. inflation.
The pound's performance is also influenced by expectations regarding Bank of England policy. BoE Governor Andrew Bailey stated that future rate hikes should not be viewed as an inevitable process but rather judged based on changes in the economic and geopolitical environment.
However, if the August CPI data exceeds expectations, it could lead to a strengthening of the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields, potentially causing GBP/USD to decline toward 1.3445.
