GBP/USD Pair Declines as Gilt Yields Fail to Support Sterling Amid Rising Energy Costs
The GBP/USD pair declined to 1.3529 on Wednesday, extending its losses for a second consecutive day. The move is dollar-led rather than sterling-specific, with the USD Index rising 0.1% to near 99.75, its highest level in over two weeks.
Rising gilt yields have failed to support the pound, despite reaching their highest levels since June 2008 and June 1998 respectively. The 10-year gilt yield climbed to 5.294%, while the 30-year gilt yield jumped as high as 5.904% on September 1.
The UK's heavy reliance on imported energy amplifies its vulnerability to supply shocks, with Britain's exposure being structural. As an energy importer, expensive oil feeds directly into domestic inflation with no offsetting producer revenue.
