GBP/USD Surges as UK Retail Sales Growth Slows Sharply
The UK's retail sales growth slowed sharply in July, falling from 3.8% year-over-year in June to just 1.6% in July. This is a significant deceleration that missed analysts' forecasts of 2.2%. On a monthly basis, retail sales fell by 0.5%, with non-food store sales volumes declining by 1.3%, largely driven by weaker sales of clothing and household goods.
According to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), adverse weather conditions and reduced promotional activity contributed to diminished underlying consumer demand.
Despite this disappointing retail sales data, the British pound strengthened against the US dollar, rising 0.11% to $1.3644 as it pushed through a key technical resistance level.
