GBP/USD Treads Water as BoE Hawkishness Meets Bailey's Caution
The Pound to US Dollar exchange rate (GBP/USD) has shown some improvement over the past month, thanks in part to the Bank of England's hawkish stance. According to MUFG analysts, the BoE's decision to hold rates steady is supportive for Sterling, but Governor Andrew Bailey's comments have limited the pair's upside potential.
The GBP/USD exchange rate ended July at 1.3482, up 1.75% over the month after recovering sharply from lows near 1.3220. The pair gained in each of the final three sessions, including a 0.70% rise on July 30 and a further 0.16% advance on Friday.
MUFG's analysis of the BoE meeting found that policymakers are still focused on inflation persistence, second-round effects, and the risk that higher energy prices feed into domestic inflation. While this stance provides some support for Sterling, Bailey's remarks have capped the extent to which markets can price a more aggressive tightening cycle.
The technical picture is also supportive, with the GBP/USD exchange rate above both the rising 20-day moving average and the 50-day average. However, the pair remains below its recent high at 1.3558 and the May peak near 1.3658. For now, MUFG's conclusion stands: the BoE's hawkish hold supports the Pound, but Bailey's restraint limits how far it can run.
