GBP Vulnerable to Month-End Rebalancing Flows Amid UK Policy Shift
Month-end rebalancing flows have left the British Pound (GBP) vulnerable due to its strong performance and stretched GBP/USD levels. According to BNY's Geoff Yu, the Pound is particularly exposed given these conditions.
The UK policy mix has also been a key factor in shaping expectations for the Pound and gilts. Chancellor John Healey emphasized fiscal discipline under the Labour government, pledging to remain within existing fiscal rules while deferring decisions on raising defense spending until next year's spending review.
Healey's commitment to fiscal discipline is seen as a way to balance tighter financial constraints with growing defense and resilience demands in response to higher security risks. The UK's August 2026 Lloyds' Business Barometer showed business confidence rose 4 points to 53%, the highest since March, which may support the Pound.
However, GBP still faces earnings-translation drag due to stretched GBP/USD levels, making it vulnerable to month-end rebalancing flows. In contrast, the EUR benefits from hedging flows and relatively supportive rate profiles, but also faces a similar risk as the GBP.
