German Factory Sector Surges Amid Services Contraction
Germany's factory sector surged in August, according to data released on September 1. The HCOB Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index climbed to 54.1, beating the 52.0 consensus forecast and marking the fastest factory expansion since mid-2024. This unexpected burst of momentum offers a rare bright spot for Europe's largest economy, which has struggled under elevated energy costs and sluggish global demand.
The manufacturing sector accounts for roughly a fifth of Germany's economic output, and its acceleration suggests industrial firms may finally be turning a corner after a prolonged slump driven by high energy costs and supply chain disruptions. However, the services PMI fell to 48.5 in August, missing the 50.1 flash estimate and dropping below the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction for the first time since February.
The composite index slipped to 51.0 from 51.5 in July, signaling that overall private sector growth is cooling faster than economists anticipated. The mixed data complicates ECB policy decisions as inflation remains elevated and growth fragile.
