Germany Services Sector Contracts as HCOB PMI Hits 48.5
Germany's services sector has contracted for the first time since February, according to the HCOB Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for August. The index fell to 48.5, down from 50.4 in July and below the preliminary estimate of 50.1.
The PMI reading indicates contraction when below 50, so this marks a significant downturn in the sector that accounts for around 70% of Germany's GDP. Weaker business activity and new orders are contributing to the decline, with economists attributing it to factors such as soft consumer demand, high inflation, and tight interest rates.
The European Central Bank (ECB) may take notice of this data, which could influence its policy deliberations on balancing inflation control with supporting growth. A sustained services downturn might increase pressure on the ECB to pause or reverse its rate-hiking cycle.
