Germany's Drought-Stricken Waterways Fuel Rising Inflation Fears

The European economy is facing inflationary pressures due to extreme weather conditions in Germany and Europe.

Rising transport costs, particularly on waterways such as the Rhine, are driving up prices for energy sources like diesel and heating oil, which will be passed on to consumers, according to Torsten Schmidt, an economist at RWI, Leibniz Institute for Economic Research.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reports that global food prices are 30% higher than in 2020, with meat and oilseeds experiencing sharp increases since then.

A study by the European Central Bank (ECB) and five European research institutes warns that climate change and extreme weather events could make it harder for central banks to achieve price stability.
