Gig Economy Workers in Australia Secure Minimum Wage Protections
Delivery riders for companies like UberEats and DoorDash in Australia are now entitled to a minimum wage of $31.30 per hour, plus insurance, thanks to a new deal between these platforms and the Transport Workers Union (TWU). This change went into effect on August 17, just days after the Fair Work Commission approved the agreement.
The deal also requires DoorDash and UberEats to take out insurance policies that cover injuries related to their work. Additionally, workers must have third-party insurance for the vehicles they use for deliveries.
TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine hailed the changes as a major win for gig workers in Australia, saying 'the world is looking on as gig workers in Australia win new rights and protections that will change their lives.'
Managing Director of UberEats Australia and New Zealand Ed Kitchen emphasized that this minimum wage is a floor, not a ceiling, and that many riders already earn above $31.30 per hour.
