Global Central Banks Gear Up for Rare Rate Hike Decisions
The global financial markets are bracing for a rare 'super central bank week,' with four major central banks announcing rate decisions within days. The U.S. Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan, Bank of England, and Taiwan's Central Bank are all scheduled to make announcements.
The Fed is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, with a nearly 90% probability priced in by markets. This would mark the first rate hike in three years and have significant implications for global monetary policy.
The catalyst for this expectation was the release of U.S. August Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which showed core inflation exceeding expectations. TD Securities analysts stated that this shows no improvement in inflation, making a 25-basis-point Fed hike highly likely.
For Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, this decision is critical, as he has previously stated that if the Fed cannot 'become convinced quickly enough that underlying inflation is moving toward target,' there will be 'work to do.' The latest core inflation data shows that this condition has not been met.
