Global Markets Decline Amid AI Concerns and Bond Market Pressure
Global markets experienced a decline on Monday as investors awaited key events this week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1% and pulled further away from its all-time high set earlier in the month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a 150-point increase, while the Nasdaq composite fell by 0.4%. Tech stocks led the downward trend due to concerns over artificial intelligence technology prices being too high.
Nvidia, a major player in AI chips, will release its quarterly earnings report on Wednesday, which could impact AI-related stocks. The company's stock sank by 2.1%, and Micron Technology dropped 5.1% and Broadcom fell 1.9%. These declines contributed to the S&P 500's overall decrease.
The bond market remains under pressure, with longer-term Treasury yields climbing due to concerns over high inflation and government debt. The U.S. Treasury Department attempted to calm these concerns by announcing a surprise move last week to increase buybacks of Treasurys. However, analysts warned that this may have only a limited effect.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury eased to 4.69% from 4.74% late Friday and is back below its level before the U.S. Treasury Department's announcement. This easing was partly due to a drop in oil prices, with Brent crude falling by 2% to $90.78 per barrel.
Despite the temporary relief, analysts warn that the U.S. government's attempts to influence the bond market could ultimately lead to higher pressure on inflation. The Federal Reserve may be forced to raise interest rates to combat inflation, which is already above desired levels.
