Global Markets Mixed Amid Stagflation Concerns
Global stock markets were mixed on Monday as concerns over stagflation weighed on investor sentiment. The US economy's weaker-than-expected report last week led to a decline in US stocks, with the S&P 500 falling 0.2% and the Dow industrials dipping 0.2%. The Nasdaq composite shed 0.3%.
In Europe, Germany's DAX was nearly unchanged at 26,438.04, while France's CAC 40 lost 0.1% to 8,628.32. Britain's FTSE 100 gained 0.2% to 10,766.46.
However, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index gained 0.7% to 69,220.25 after the Japanese government reported a slight increase in economic growth, expanding at a 1.1% annual pace. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong and Shanghai Composite index also rose by 1.3% and 1.4%, respectively.
The uncertainty surrounding stagflation, characterized by stagnant economy and high inflation, has raised concerns among investors. The Federal Reserve's interest rate policy will be closely watched as it attempts to balance the two factors without exacerbating either issue.
