Global Markets Price in Massive Rate Hikes Amid Oil, Spending Fears
Global markets are bracing for higher interest rates as oil prices, government spending, and investment in artificial intelligence reshape the inflation outlook. According to Bloomberg data, traders are pricing in nearly 400 basis points of interest-rate increases across seven major economies over the next year.
The expected rate hikes are concentrated in Japan, Canada, the eurozone, and the UK, with a faster pace than in the United States. South Korea is leading the pack with an anticipated increase of more than 100 basis points.
Attention is turning to the Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes for clues on the US central bank's monetary policy outlook. Expectations for a September rate hike have weakened following an unexpected decline in US nonfarm payrolls and modest consumer-price inflation data.
