Global Markets Slide Amid Inflation Concerns and Interest Rate Hikes
Global markets experienced a decline on Thursday as investors digested recent inflation data and interest rate hikes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite fell by 0.6%, 0.65%, and 0.66% respectively.
The European Central Bank raised its key interest rate to 2.50% from 2.25% on Thursday, which had been anticipated given recent signals. However, this decision did not significantly impact the region's stock markets or the euro.
Brent crude futures rose by another 7% to $108.64 a barrel amid concerns over the Iran conflict and potential inflationary pressure. Nick Twidale, chief market strategist at ATFX Global, noted that Brent pushing through the $100 level is seen as a significant event in the current market.
Investors are also focused on Friday's U.S. consumer price update, which will provide further insight into inflation trends. Additionally, investors were digesting signs of looser U.S. fiscal policy following President Donald Trump's promise to pay every U.S. adult a $5,000 'Trump dividend' if his party wins the November congressional elections.
