Global Oil Prices Soar Amid Rising Tensions in Middle East
The global oil market is facing increased challenges due to rising tensions in the Middle East. The Houthi rebels have threatened to attack Saudi Arabian ships passing through the Bab el-Mandeb, a key waterway for oil exports.
As a result, tanker rates have hit record highs and bunker fuel has been in short supply, adding to the cost of shipping. This is particularly significant as around 80% of the world's trade travels by ship.
The disruption also extends to other oil pipelines, including Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, which was targeted by drone attacks from Iraq. A planned meeting between Iran and other Persian Gulf powers to discuss a safe channel through the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed.
Oil prices have responded accordingly, with Brent crude rising 3% to $107.81 a barrel and US crude climbing 2.9% to $102.94. This is a concern for the Federal Reserve as it meets this week, with markets pricing in an 86% chance of a 25 basis point rate hike on Wednesday.
