Global Order Rupture: Mark Carney Warns of Consequences
Mark Carney warned that the world is experiencing a rupture in the global order, where great powers are using economic integration as a weapon. This shift has led to a decrease in trust and cooperation among nations.
The former Governor of the Bank of England noted that this phenomenon was not inevitable, but rather a result of the choices made by leaders. He cited the example of the communist system in Czechoslovakia, which relied on the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately knew to be false.
Carney emphasized that living within a lie is not sustainable and that countries must develop greater strategic autonomy in key areas such as energy, food, critical minerals, finance, and supply chains. However, he cautioned that a world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable.
The Canadian government has taken steps to adapt to this new reality by shifting its strategic posture and adopting a value-based realism approach. This approach prioritizes both principle and pragmatism, recognizing the need for countries to work together despite differing values and interests.
