GLP-1 Drugs Outpace AI as New Zealand Economy Sees Measurable Productivity Gains
The New Zealand economy is experiencing a significant shift due to the increasing use of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, which are delivering measurable productivity gains before AI has even started.
According to Goldman Sachs analysts, GLP-1 drugs will deliver a 1% lift to US GDP through productivity and cost savings. This estimate is not a forecast of something that might arrive but rather an assessment of value already in motion.
In New Zealand, the impact is also being felt, with approximately 50,000 people using GLP-1 drugs as of early 2026. Users of these medications consume around 20% fewer calories and spend about 30% less on groceries, leading to a significant shift in consumer behavior.
The effects are not limited to the domestic market; New Zealand's export economy is also being influenced by the changing dietary habits of consumers. NZTE's exporter analysis suggests that sweet and salty snacks, confectionery, baked goods, and sugary drinks are under structural pressure, while fresh produce, whole foods, high-protein dairy, lean meat, fish, and seafood are picking up tailwinds.
