Gold Holds Firm as PCE Inflation Data and Fed Rate Signals Take Center Stage
The price of gold held steady in early trading as investors waited for the release of the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index and fresh signals from central bank officials on interest rates.
The PCE index is the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, reflecting changes in the prices of goods and services, and it will have a significant impact on the Fed's decision to raise or lower interest rates. According to consensus estimates, the PCE index is expected to show a year-over-year increase of [percentage]%, while core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is forecast to rise [percentage]% annually.
The Federal Reserve officials have recently struck a cautious tone, emphasizing the need for more evidence that inflation is sustainably moving toward the 2% target. Several policymakers have suggested that a rate cut could be appropriate later this year, but only if data supports it. The CME FedWatch tool currently shows a [percentage]% probability of a rate cut at the Fed's June meeting, down from [percentage]% a month ago.
