Gold Holds Steady Ahead of Key Inflation Data and Central Bank Commentary
Gold prices remained steady on Wednesday after reaching their highest level since mid-May in the previous session, as investors waited for key data and commentary from top central bankers. The metal's recent gains are seen as a result of shifting interest rate expectations and concerns about US fiscal sustainability, particularly following the Treasury's bond buyback announcement last week. A softer than expected inflation print paired with a dovish or balanced tone from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at this week's Jackson Hole symposium would likely reinforce expectations for lower real yields and support further gains in gold.
The current setup follows earlier data that tempered expectations for near-term tightening, including an unexpected decline in nonfarm payrolls alongside consumer inflation coming in line with forecasts. Traders are pricing in roughly a two-thirds chance that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged at its next meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
Meanwhile, eased tensions between Iran and Oman over managing the Strait of Hormuz sent oil prices lower, potentially complicating the inflation outlook gold traders were pricing. However, renewed deterioration in confidence around US fiscal sustainability could support gold independent of near-term rate path.
