Gold Prices Soar as US Economy Concerns Mount
The gold market has experienced a significant resurgence in recent times due to concerns over the US economy and inflation. The non-farm payrolls report for July showed a decline of 23,000 jobs, leading traders to reassess their expectations of further rate hikes. This caused bond markets to rally, with the US Treasury doubling its planned buybacks of long-dated debt in an attempt to stabilize the market.
The result was a weakening of the US dollar and a surge in gold prices, which rose by over six percent to $4,550 (A$6,910). Copper also maintained its value, holding firm at around $6.50 (A$9.95) per pound due to chronic supply shortages.
In Australia, federal debt has surpassed the trillion-dollar mark, with taxpayers shouldering the burden of record government spending and higher taxes. However, the ASX's healthcare index experienced a significant boost, rising by 14 percent in just one week after CSL delivered better-than-expected financial results.
Among the top performers on the ASX was Genesis Resources, which saw its share price surge by 500 percent (0.5c - 3c) after announcing high-grade gold samples from its Arltunga copper-gold project in the Northern Territory. The company collected 53 reconnaissance samples, with standout results coming from the WP-10 prospect.
Triton Minerals also made significant gains, with its share price doubling (0.25c - 0.5c) after resolving a long-running dispute over the sale of its Mozambique graphite assets. The company secured a pathway to complete the transaction and will receive $5.5 million in cash.
