Gold Slides Amid Inflation Fears and Rate Hike Expectations
Gold prices dipped on Wednesday as rising inflation worries and expectations of higher interest rates put downward pressure on the precious metal. The escalating Middle East tensions, which have led to a jump in Brent crude prices for a fourth consecutive session, also contributed to the decline.
The U.S. producer price index data due on Thursday and consumer price index data set to follow on Friday will be closely watched by investors as they gauge the impact of inflation on the economy. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, a majority of traders expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting.
Despite gold's reputation as an inflation hedge, elevated interest rates weigh heavily on its appeal, making it less attractive to investors. The Bank of England, meanwhile, is expected to keep the Bank Rate at 3.75% for the rest of the year and through at least mid-2027, according to a Reuters poll.
