Gold Surges as US Debt Intervention Revives Fiscal Fears

Gold prices surged to their highest level in three months on Friday after the US Treasury's surprise intervention in the government bond market sparked concerns over America's growing fiscal burden and dollar weakness.

The move, which included a significant increase in purchases of long-dated government debt, led to lower Treasury yields and a weaker US dollar. This shift has revived the so-called 'debasement trade', where investors expect governments to tolerate higher inflation or allow currencies to weaken due to large debt burdens.

'The debasement trade is back as both a trade and a theme,' said Nicky Shiels, metals strategist at MKS Pamp. The Treasury's move has also boosted gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which saw their largest one-day increase since September 2025 with the addition of 18 tonnes of gold to their holdings on Thursday.

Gold investors are now faced with a different concern: whether attempts to manage America's borrowing costs could weaken confidence in the dollar and increase demand for alternative stores of value. The metal's rally is no longer driven solely by expectations of lower interest rates, but also by concerns about fiscal credibility, currency weakness, and the sustainability of government debt.
