Gold Surges Past $4,500 as Dollar Weakens and Treasury Intervenes
Gold prices have been on a tear this week, reaching a three-month high as investors flock to the safe-haven asset. The dollar has weakened against major currencies, making gold cheaper for foreign buyers and boosting demand.
The U.S. Treasury's efforts to contain longer-term borrowing costs are also supporting gold prices. The Treasury announced that it would double its buybacks of longer-dated government bonds to at least $4 billion per operation over the next quarter, with Secretary Scott Bessent hinting at further increases.
Analysts at ING note that these buyback operations were designed to address market liquidity issues, but the main takeaway is that higher longer-dated Treasury yields are on the Treasury's radar and need to be addressed. The concern is that efforts to push down long-term yields could make financial conditions easier even as the Federal Reserve tries to keep inflation contained.
