Gold Surges to Near Two-Month High Amid Weak US Retail Data
Gold prices reached near two-month highs of around US$4,400 per ounce on August 17, driven by weak US retail sales data that weighed on the US dollar and eased fears of imminent interest rate hikes.
The yellow metal extended a two-week advance, supported by central bank purchases and investor appetite. Spot gold was 0.4% higher at US$4,391.60 an ounce at 10:50 am in Singapore.
Analysts note that a break above US$4,400 is needed to confirm further momentum. The minutes of the Federal Reserve's July policy meeting due on Wednesday are set to provide some clarity on rate considerations.
