Gold Surges to Two-Month High as Investors Rebuild Safe-Haven Positions
Gold prices have surged to a two-month high, reaching $4,432.74 an ounce, as investors rebuild safe-haven positions ahead of key US inflation data.
The spot price climbed by 1% on Tuesday, its strongest level since June 5, while US futures gained 1.7% to $4,492.60.
This rebound has removed gold from the $4,000 area tested in July and is supported by weaker US employment data and a deterioration in US-Iran diplomacy.
Forex.com analyst Fawad Razaqzada believes softer inflation will be key to extending gold's breakout, while IG analyst Tony Sycamore sees the move as a combination of investors returning after missing the decline towards $4,000, speculative short-covering and renewed demand for defensive assets.
However, geopolitical tension is also providing another source of buying after US-Iran negotiations deteriorated, which could eventually collide with sustained gains in crude prices that lift inflation expectations and make the Fed more willing to tighten policy.
