Gold Tumbles as Inflation Fears Weigh on Prices Amid Fed Rate Hike Expectations

Gold prices are facing headwinds as market participants remain preoccupied with near-term inflation worries, partly fueled by climbing commodity costs. According to Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, gold is testing support around $4,350 per ounce after recording its strongest monthly advance of the year.

The metal's downturn began on Friday following Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks at the Federal Reserve Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Warsh reaffirmed the central bank's dedication to reducing inflation to its 2% objective, generating three immediate obstacles: elevated expectations for short-term rates, higher real and nominal yields, and a firmer U.S. dollar.

Hansen noted that both gold and silver have dropped more than 4% since Friday, as Warsh's address weighed on the metals. However, he expressed doubt that this focus would interrupt the longer-term upward trajectory supported by mounting government debt and concerns over currency debasement. Hansen explained that higher real rates stemming from a credible inflation-fighting central bank typically weigh on gold, whereas rising long-term yields driven by worries about debt sustainability, substantial sovereign issuance, and fiscal credibility represent a distinct scenario.

Ongoing central-bank purchases and reserve diversification offer another structural pillar of demand that is less responsive to short-term fluctuations in U.S. rates. Hansen also pointed out that supply-driven inflationary forces pose unique difficulties for the Federal Reserve, as central banks can curb demand but not generate additional crude oil, refining capacity, or natural gas.
