Gold Under Pressure as Strong Jobs Data Boosts Rate Hike Bets
Gold (XAU/USD) is under pressure after strong US jobs data boosted expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in September. The August employment report showed nonfarm Payrolls increased by 162,000, exceeding expectations of 55,000, while the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%.
The Labor Force Participation Rate also rose, indicating the US labor market remains firm despite earlier signs of weakness. This has lifted the chances of a September rate hike to around 58%, as higher interest rates can weigh on gold since it doesn't offer interest income.
Rising oil prices are adding another layer of uncertainty, with higher energy costs potentially keeping inflation elevated and supporting a tighter policy stance from major central banks. However, the US Dollar has continued to decline despite stronger employment data, limiting further pressure on gold.
Markets now focus on upcoming US inflation figures, which could determine the next move for gold. A stronger inflation report may increase expectations for a September rate hike, while softer data could reduce those expectations.
