Goldman: Inflation Expectations Remain Anchored Despite Prolonged Price Pressures
Goldman Sachs has published a research note on U.S. inflation expectations, which suggests that fears among Federal Reserve officials may be overstated. The investment bank's analysis found that despite more than five years of above-target price pressures, inflation expectations remain anchored.
The report highlighted three core lessons drawn from economic research: anchoring expectations is critical because short-term inflation expectations directly pass through into wage demands and price setting; expectations are heavily shaped by lived experiences rather than central bank communications alone; and public attentiveness to Fed signaling remains low during normal periods, meaning official communication has limited power to anchor expectations.
The note pointed to conflicting signals between major economic surveys. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York indicates that recent inflation primarily aligned younger cohorts with older generations, while elevated readings from the University of Michigan survey were partially attributed to recent survey methodology changes and increased political polarization.
