Goldman Sees Hotter Headline, Softer Core as August CPI Report Looms
The upcoming August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is set to play a crucial role in determining the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. Goldman Sachs economists Jessica Rindels and Ronnie Walker have released their forecast, which aligns closely with market consensus but carries an important distinction.
According to Goldman, the August CPI report will show a hotter headline figure due to rising energy prices, while the core inflation rate is expected to remain relatively restrained. The forecast predicts a 0.39% increase in headline CPI, driven by a 2.3% jump in energy costs and a rebound in gasoline prices.
The analysts also expect airfares to surge 4.0% as higher oil and jet fuel costs are passed through the system, while shelter costs should remain stable. However, Goldman anticipates core inflation to settle near 0.2% over the next few months, with persistent oil disruptions potentially tilting the risks higher.
Rindels and Walker have been accurate forecasters throughout the recent inflation cycle, making their August preview a reliable starting point for investors and analysts alike. The market's focus on the September Federal Reserve decision has intensified in recent weeks, with Friday's CPI report now holding significant sway over the outcome.
