Goolsbee Sounds Alarm on AI Data Center Boom's Economic Risks
Austan Goolsbee, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, is sounding the alarm on the potential economic risks associated with the rapid expansion of AI data centers.
Goolsbee warned that the AI hype could lead to overheating in the US economy, causing inflation to rise and interest rates to increase. He noted that while the real side of the economy has been stable, it is inching towards dangers of overheat.
The AI data center boom is creating pressure on other parts of the economy, with companies competing for resources such as construction workers, heating and cooling equipment, and other infrastructure needs. Goolsbee expressed concern that if the impact of data center build-outs spreads further through the economy, it could push up services inflation.
Goolsbee emphasized the importance of consumer spending in keeping the economy stable and growing, citing continued consumer spending as a major reason for the economy's resilience. He also highlighted the need for policymakers to balance the risk of reacting to transitory supply shocks against the risk of enduring above-target inflation.
