Goolsbee Warns Inflation Tops Labor Market Concerns in US Economy
Austan Goolsbee, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, highlighted inflation as the primary economic concern facing the US economy. In a video interview hosted by Wired for its 'Tech Support' series, Goolsbee stated that while labor indicators show a stable market, rising prices pose a significant threat to the economy.
Goolsbee emphasized that the main issue is not widespread job losses or industrial slowdown but rather rapidly increasing prices. He noted that the public often reacts strongly to inflation and that key labor statistics demonstrate a steady national employment market with steady unemployment figures, job growth, and layoff rates.
The Federal Reserve maintained its policy rate at 3.50% to 3.75% during its July meeting, a decision that was not unanimous as three policymakers dissented in favor of an interest rate increase. The Fed's priority remains bringing inflation back down towards the long-term target of 2%, with Goolsbee citing the ongoing persistence of inflation above this target.
