Greeks with Swiss Franc Loans Get Euro Switch Option by September Deadline
Many Greeks who took out loans in Swiss francs during the late 2000s are finally getting some relief. After years of struggling to repay their debts, debtors can now switch the denomination of their loan to euros at favorable rates. The deadline for applying is September 30.
The move comes after the government initially rejected calls to forgive these loans. With over 20,000 Swiss franc loans being regularly serviced and another 17,442 managed by loan recovery servicers, the total amount owed is a significant €5.5 billion. This is a major step for those who took out loans in Swiss francs when they were seen as safer than euros.
It's worth noting that this move may not be enough to alleviate the burden for all borrowers, but it is a welcome development nonetheless.
