Grocery Prices Set to Soar as Global Pressures Mount
Australian shoppers are bracing themselves for further grocery price increases despite inflation easing. A unique set of global price pressures has left Australia vulnerable to higher food prices, according to RaboResearch senior food analyst Michael Harvey.
The El Niño weather pattern is causing heavy rains that damage crops, while the severe heat wave in Europe is impacting food production. Global conflicts are also driving up prices, with the war in the Middle East seeing a significant increase in fertiliser costs and petrol and diesel prices.
Harvey warns that four everyday supermarket staples will get more expensive: tinned fish, coffee, cocoa, and grains. Tinned fish is being impacted by increasing seafood prices due to El Niño, which is affecting fish populations and distribution.
Coffee lovers are already experiencing higher prices after major coffee growing regions in Brazil experienced severe frost and drought, causing a global shortage. Harvey notes that the situation remains volatile, particularly when considering production costs including transport.
