A couple's retirement plans changed course after they fell in love with rural Japan. Jeff Layfield, 67, and his wife Mamiko left Hawaii to retire in Suo-Oshima island.

They were drawn by the area's mild climate and lower risk of natural disasters. The couple researched online databases of affordable homes called akiya banks and found their perfect match - a two-story seaside house for 4 million Japanese yen, or about $25,000.

Layfield said he initially fell in love with the place after discovering its deep ties to Hawaii. He claimed that everyone they met was 'just awesome.'
