Hawkish Fed vs Gulf Tensions: Markets in Turmoil

Instruments
USD AUD

Markets are grappling with two opposing forces: a hawkish Federal Reserve and a fresh escalation in the Gulf region. The US dollar has strengthened on rising rate hike odds, while oil prices surged after a US strike on Iranian rocket launchers.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish tone at Jackson Hole was reinforced by his confident remarks at the G20 on Monday. He stated that secular stagnation is no longer a concern, which boosted September rate hike odds to around 57% from 40% a week earlier. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to around 4.7%, marking three consecutive days of gains.

The stronger dollar and hawkish Fed backdrop are weighing on the Australian dollar, while oil prices have increased its value as a commodity currency. However, the AUD is still vulnerable with a support level at 0.715.
