Healey Promises New Era for UK Economy Amid Debt Concerns
UK Chancellor John Healey is set to deliver an upbeat view of the country's economy in a speech on Monday, ahead of next month's Budget. He will highlight a 'new story' of resilience and optimism for the UK economy, which he claims has turned a corner.
The chancellor's message is intended to boost consumer and business confidence, but his plans have already been met with skepticism from opposition parties. The Conservatives say Healey's proposals will do little to comfort hard-working families and businesses worried about tax rises and rising borrowing costs.
Healey will unveil a £150m fund for companies in the north of England, as part of a wider plan to generate economic growth across the country. The money is being drawn from existing funds allocated to the British Business Bank, and will be used to support 'innovative and fast-growing firms'.
However, critics argue that Healey's plans are too vague and will not address the underlying issues facing the UK economy. Helen Miller, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, said that while economic growth in every postcode sounds appealing, it would be difficult to achieve in practice.
