Heatwave Hits UK Economy for £1.15 Billion

A new study from the London School of Economics estimates that the June heatwave in the UK cost the economy £1.15 billion.

The researchers surveyed almost 2,000 Brits to understand the impact of the record-breaking heat on their working hours and ability to sleep.

The results showed that the average person lost 0.47 hours of work across the week of the heatwave, equivalent to around 24 million lost hours nationwide.

This translates to an estimated cost of over £1 billion, with the greatest effects felt by outdoor workers and those in physically demanding jobs, many of whom are among the lowest paid in the labour force.
